“METRO cops stole my plasma TV!”
These were the words of Tsakani Nyoni (52) after she was evicted along with about 100 other people from vacant land behind Midway Railway Station in Soweto.
Residents claim they were not evicted for occupying the land illegally!
They claim it’s because there are no toilets, electricity or water in the area.
Community leader Collen Khosa claims: “Police came and instructed us to move but we showed them documents proving we were in the process of buying the land from the owner. The cops then told us the place is no good for us because there are no services.”
A fight nearly broke out when residents refused to move. However, more police were called and their shacks were demolished.
Tsakani claimed during the eviction process, her TV went missing and she believes the police took it.
“It was there until the police demolished my shack,” claimed Tsakani.
“I asked the cops about it but I couldn’t get a straight answer. “I only bought it two weeks ago.”
Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar rubbished claims that residents were occupying the land legally.
“If it was legal, we wouldn’t have been given a command to evict them,” said Minnaar.
“Tsakani can visit our offices in Dube and she will be assisted.”
