Two doctors of a private hospital forgot a towel in a patient’s abdomen – The negligence resulted in the death of the patient.
The doctors have been arrested and arraigned.
The two medical doctors are expected to face the full wrath of the law after they forgot a towel in the stomach of a patient after a surgical operation leading to death PM News reports that Dr Shogunle and Dr. Adeleke Olusegun worked at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital in Johannesburg where they carried out the operation on one Hanko Kriel.
An investigation by police which was headed by Inspector Monday Bafula led to the arrest of the doctors.
They were arraigned before the Johannesburg magistrates’ court on a charge of Culpable Homicide.
Prosecutor Meredith, who is the prosecutor for this case, told the court that the doctors in an act of negligence killed Kriel after forgetting a towel in his abdomen. He quoted that the offence is punishable under South African Criminal Law Procedure as the ‘unlawful negligent killing of a human being’.
The doctors however denied the allegation and were granted bail in the sum of R100 000 each with two sureties each in like sum by the presiding magistrate.
The magistrate advised the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the office of the directorate of public prosecution for advice. The case was adjourned till September 9.
