A few months ago, gogo Dumazile Cele got into a heated argument with a young man she caught in her back yard.
The 79-year-old gogo from Folweni Township, south of Durban, allegedly accused the man of trying to break into her house and confronted him.
The man allegedly ran away in shame, but threatened that he would come back to get the gogo.
And on the evening of Women’s Day, residents and the gogo’s family members had reason to remember the threats.
Dumazile was ambushed and killed by an unknown gunman at her house.
Her son, Mfundo Cele (40), said his mum was a veteran member of the Anglican Church.
“She feared God and had no known enemies,” he said.
“Apart from that man who threatened her, she was everyone’s friend in our neighbourhood. It is so sad that she died in such a brutal manner.
“Those people who had the chance to know her are still in shock because they know how harmless she was.”
Mfundo said the gunman stormed into his mum’s house while she was enjoying her dinner.
“He allegedly said he was looking for the Cele homestead and asked if he was at the right place.
“When my mum said it was, he started firing multiple shots, fatally wounding her.”
Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said a case of murder was opened.
