Soweto – There was drama at Orlando West High school polling station when 66 year old Bhekimpilo Mthemba was denied to vote using a Dompas.
It is alleged that Bhekimpilo set himself on fire but fellow voters were quick to react setting the fire off leaving him with serious head burns and minor abdomen injuries.
Eyewitnesses reveal that Bhekimpilo tried to vote using a Dompas instead of a valid ID book which he claims never had possessed.
“Bheki is a well known ANC supporter, he tried to commit suicide by burning himself because he didn’t have a valid ID book, he brought his Dompas which do not comply with IEC standards. He was fortunate enough that fellow ANC supporters were quick to react and put off the fire leaving him with a few serious burns,” said a fellow voter who was wearing a red beret.
A fellow ANC supporter ascertained that Bheki attempted on his life because of pain and frustration.
“The old man is a serious ANC supporter, ANC was assured of his vote but unfortunately officials denied him to vote using his Dompas. Personally I am surprised because I thought a Dompass can be used as an Identification book. He was fortunate because we quickly reacted to the fire saving his life, ANC still needs his vote, he will vote in the following elections,’ he said.
Reports says Bheki was admitted at a local hospital where he is said to be “ ok and stable”
No official comment was taken from the IEC officials who seemed busy and reluctant to comment on the incident.
