Johannesburg theatre came alive after Miriam Makeba’s granddaughter, Zenzi Lee, and Mzansi’s two legendary mamas, Dorothy Masuka and Abigail Kubeka, took to the stage.
This was during the one-day tribute show in honour of the late Miriam Makeba. The show was also part of Women’s Month celebrations.
The supporting acts included the St Stithians choir, backed by Dr Johnny Mekoa and his Youth Big Band Orchestra.
This memorable event presented by Joburg Theatre and the Miriam Makeba Foundation was hosted by the veteran actor, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube.
The three women delivered a brilliant performance which took the jubilant audience – which got its money’s worth – back to the 1980s.
When Zenzi took to the stage the cheering crowd was sitting on the edge of their seats.
Zenzi’s sweet voice was mesmerising.
And when Dorothy and Abigail took to the stage they received a standing ovation.
The crowd then started dancing to the sweet melodies.
Dorothy and the equally esteemed Abigail have been performing for more than 50 years – and they are still powerful performers.
Delivering first-hand measure of the inherent power of their voices, and that of South African women musicians, this show has evoked memories and the spirit of the late Mama Miriam.
After all was said and done, their inclusion in the evening’s line-up embodies the dreams, aspirations and plans of the late Makeba.
