The poor in Zimbabwe will never improve their lives if the country is destabilised‚ and the African National Congress will never support any plan to do so‚ the party’s secretary-general‚ Gwede Mantashe‚ said on Tuesday.
“If you destabilise Zimbabwe‚ you are pushing the poor deeper into abject poverty‚” he told reporters at a briefing in Johannesburg following a ANC national working committee meeting.
“Our view is‚ if that if the economy is not assisted to be revived and recover‚ they will be in trouble for a long time. But that will never give a licence to regime change elements to revive restlessness in Zimbabwe‚” Mantashe said.

Eight things to know about the man behind Zimbabwe’s #ThisFlag
Zimbabwe was hit by a crippling public servants’ strike and violent protests‚ which led to the closure of businesses and the country’s transport system‚ last week. Clerics in the country have reportedly started taking a stand against President Robert Mugabe’s administration over the deteriorating situation in the country.
At the root of the protests last week were banks running short of cash‚ police extorting cash from motorists at widespread roadblocks‚ delays in the payment of government salaries and a ban on many basic imports‚ as the country suffers a severe drought that has left millions hungry.
Mantashe said the ANC appreciated that the negative “economic situation” in Zimbabwe had been going on for some time‚ but that every citizen should “co-operate positively”.

Zimbabwe protest pastor Evan Mawarire charged with ‘inciting violence’
“That there are problems in Zimbabwe should never be a licence to destabilise it.”
Mantashe said South Africa could assist Zimbabwe but the initiative of rebuilding its economy was its government’s responsibility.
“It’s not our responsibility. We must rebuild ours (economy). We are growing at less than 1% …‚” he said.
On developments in South Sudan‚ Mantashe said the ANC was worried about the situation.
“Our call is that if they are at war … they will never have stability and if they don’t have stability they will never grow that country … It can’t be built with a firearm‚ it can only be built with the people being involved in economic activity there.”
Heavy fighting broke out between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the SPLA in Opposition (SPLA-IO) last week‚ which threatened to plunge the country back into civil war.
A resolution was taken by the extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) council of ministers held on Monday in Nairobi‚ Kenya‚ for an immediate ceasefire. IGAD also called on President Salva Kiir and first vice-president Riek Machar to assume their responsibility and to take immediate measures to prevail on their respective military leaders and to end the fighting.
