A tavern owner has appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court yesterday after his attempt to bribe an officer resulted in his arrest.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed that the 46-year-old man was arrested during an undercover operation in Macassar.

The tavern owner was found to be operating with a false liquor licence and allegedly paid a police officer R5 000 to get a liquor licence.

“The owner promised that he would pay another R30 000 on receipt of the licence. Yesterday another undercover operation was held and the owner paid R15 000 for the licence, where after he was arrested for bribery,” she said. “The conduct of the police officer is commendable and a clear indication that officers… stay committed to their duties and will not tolerate corruption.

“It furthermore serves as a warning to tavern owners to operate within the ambit of the law.”
