Convicted 29 year old murderer Oscar Pistorius is serving his six-year sentence for killing his blond girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in a single, comfortable hospital prison cell, an official said on Thursday.
The disgraced former paralympian champion is in the same cell in Kgosi Mampuru prison he was previously incarcerated for one year.
Manelisi Wolela, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services said the special accommodation was due to his disability and that the prison had never had a double amputee inmate before.
“He is in the same facility in the hospital section of the Pretoria prison; he will therefore receive special treatment because of his vulnerability. His private chef and nutritionist will monitor what he consumes and a private gym facility will be accessible to him, his personal athletics trainer will be allowed to train him to keep him in shape for the next Olympics.
“Mr Pistorius is a role model to many and serves national interests and athletics is his sole source of income, as correctional service department we need to preserve and further build the talent he has. His six year sentence will definitely elapse so nobody has the right to kill and destroy what he built during all these years,” he said.
Wolela said the hospital wing of the prison had a number of other prisoners, some of whom are sick or disabled.
“If you expose them to communal normal cells, they will be vulnerable, inmates with special cases require special treatment, and we can’t mix them.” he said.
Oscar Pistorius, 29, began his six year sentence on Wednesday after he had his conviction of manslaughter was last year upgraded to murder for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp three years ago.
Oscar representatives said he won’t appeal the sentence, which is just one year longer than his earlier jail term.
Pistorius will be eligible for parole after serving between half to two-thirds of his sentence.
