Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro have increased movie ticket prices, with 3D movies at top-tier Ster-Kinekor cinemas going from R85 to R91, while Nu Metro’s prices went from R80 to R85.
At Ster-Kinekor, increases ranged from 6.7% to 9.1%, while price changes at Nu Metro varied between 0% and 30.8%.
Earlier this year, Ster-Kinekor CEO Wanda Matandela said they will absorb cost increases due to the weakening rand as much as they can.
Consumer spending in South Africa is under pressure, and Matandela said they know that entertainment is a luxury expense.
The price increases across Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas are summarised in the tables below.
It is interesting to note that Nu Metro has done away with many of its cheaper-tier cinemas.
Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro also have several programmes and deals running that allow moviegoers to get cheaper movie tickets, which were not taken into account.
