Johannesburg – A man was shot dead and a metro police officer left injured following a high-speed chase in Etwatwa, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) said.
Two officers were on a routine patrol when they spotted a “suspicious-looking” VW Golf 5 and tried to stop it, Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said.
“The driver refused to stop and a high speed chase ensued until the VW Golf was cornered and stopped at the intersection of Chris Hani Drive and Madikizela Street in Etwatwa,” he said.
“The aggressive driver wrestled with one of the officers and in the process managed to grab the officer’s firearm…a shot rang out and the officer suffered a neck wound.”
The other officer fired at the suspect, killing him.
The injured officer was rushed to hospital for medical attention, he said.
