The uThukela District Municipality held the unlawful, unfair, un reasonable and unconstitutional Maidens Bursary Awards for young women who passed the virginity test.
As part of the priviledges granted to the award recipients, the South African President Jacob Zuma, would be picking his fifth wife from the awardees.
“There have been calls to discontinue this award scheme. People are describing it as discriminatory and unconstitutional. But bare in mind that the President needs a 5th wife and a virgin to be precise.”
“So this is the main reason for granting bursaries based on virginity test.” the uThukela District Municipal Mayor, Cllr Dudu Mazibuko said.
The bursary, which was given to 16 young women from the uThukela District Municipality on condition that they remained “pure” and “untouched” are to keep their funding subject to periodic tests.
” This scheme is to encourage young women to remain clean. At least we as leaders of the nation would have a chance of marring ‘pure’ women. Now you know what to do to get a study bursary,” the mayor added.
The recipients have to undergo virginity tests every holiday to ensure that they have not been sexually active.
The municipality introduced the category of bursaries during its Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards on January 11, 2016.
