GIFT Maake and her terrified kids made an impassioned plea and screamed, begging their attacker not to kill them on Thursday night.
Soon their neighbours heard the attacker vowing that Gift and her lover Elvis Ngobeni (30) were as good as dead.
Then came an explosion and in an instant Gift’s home was on fire. When it was finally put out Gift and her two kids were rushed to hospital with serious burn wounds.
At the same time the charred body of Elvis was found curled up on what remained of their sofa.
There was even more sad news when Gift from Kumani Village, outside Thulamahashe in Mpumalanga, succumbed to her wounds in the early hours of Monday morning.
Community leader Robert Hlatshwayo (80) said: “We were preparing to go to bed when we heard a woman and her kids screaming for help.”
He said they managed to contain the fire until firefighters and cops arrived.
They also smashed the burglar bars and windows to rescue Gift and the kids.
A neighbour said she heard a man’s voice telling Gift and her lover they should die but she didn’t know who it was. Elvis’ twin sister Nolwazi said: “We don’t have the money to bury him and the undertakers want money. We appeal to Good Samaritans to help us bury him.” Constable Sonile Usinga said the cops were investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
