A POLICE officer’s main duty is to arrest criminals. But on Friday the tables were turned when a group of cops were put behind bars!
Four policemen from the Umlazi tactical response team are facing kidnapping charges.
The cops, aged between 28 and 37, allegedly extorted an undisclosed amount of money from a 49-year-old Durban businessman in exchange for his freedom.
KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “The businessman reported the matter to Montclair police on 8 June.
“Following a swift investigation by detectives from Brighton Beach, the suspects were arrested on Friday,” said Zwane.
Zwane added the cops made their first appearance at the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday.
“They will be kept in custody until 27 June after being charged with kidnapping, theft, extortion and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.”
