THE gogo was walking past Newsstands Village on a bitterly cold Monday morning in Maluti, when she heard a baby cry.
Unsure where the cries were coming from, the gogo followed the sound.
To her horror, it led her straight to a pit toilet. And when she looked, she could see a newborn child trapped inside! Now, thanks to the gogo and prison officials’ heroic efforts, the little baby boy is alive.
The day-old miracle baby boy survived a horrific night after allegedly being thrown into the pit toilet soon after his birth. The gogo said when she saw the baby, she alerted neighbours.
By chance, a correctional services car happened to be passing by.
Matatiele correctional services officer, Bulelani Letuka, said: “My colleague and I were informed that a baby was found in a pit toilet. We saw him lying inside and he was naked.
“His voice was still strong. We phoned the police and they asked if there was any way we could rescue the baby. With the help of the headman, we removed the toilet seat and used a spade to get the baby out.
“It was later discovered that the mother was sleeping in a nearby house.
“She apparently said she had been to the toilet at 4am with a running stomach.
“The village’s elderly women took her inside to check her and found that she was the baby’s mum. We then took her and the baby to hospital and informed cops. It is by the grace of God that the baby survived.”
Matatiele police spokesman Captain Raphael Motloung confirmed the incident and said a case of attempted murder and child neglect were opened at Maluti cop shop. He said the baby was still in hospital but added that the mum has since disappeared.
